Smokey skies and an epic splat

Our province of British Columbia is burning. Forests are on fire everywhere. For many weeks there has been heavy smoke in the air. The sun is orange. And we spend most of our time inside because it hurts our lungs to breath too much outside.

We still get walks. But we are not rushed. I like this, because I get to go as slowly as I want.

So the first half of the story of this picture is the orange light from our smokey skies.

The second half of the story from this picture is my muddy paw. You cannot see my back paws, but they are even muddier.

Friends, the reason there are so many fires right now is because it has not rained in practically forever. Everything is very, very, very dry. There is no mud anywhere.

Except for one creek. In the winter this is a fierce creek, with much flowing water. When we cross this creek, Ojo and I make epic leaps.

Today I made an epic leap over the creek, just like I usually do. But something happened. My leap failed. I landed elbow-deep in the only mud in the entire city. I am not sure why my person was laughing so much? Now I have three paws to clean!

That's terrible! Trapped in the mud....we wouldn't have laughed...well, maybe. We haven't had rain in AGES either. One hundred percent of our state is in drought. Every day, we see huge trucks with donated hay from the south and west heading out to properties to help keep the stock alive. So far, we haven't had too many bad fires. Certainly, none near us. We hope it rains here and there soon.

Muddy paws are easily cleaned. Hope it rains so you can breathe easier. The hazy skies we've been having here in WNY are because of the fires on the other side of the continent! We can't imagine what you might be having!

Bertie too has an unfailing ability to locate mud even when the rest of the ground is dried to dust. Our rains returned about a month ago. We really hope yours come soon too.

Your fires and smoke are so awful and scary! We have had the wettest summer and mom complains about cutting the grass twice a week. How we wish we could share our rains with you!

Oops! Well, we hear mud is good for the paws!
